Resident Return Visa

Resident Return Visas (RRV) are designed for Australian permanent residents and certain former permanent residents who need to maintain or restore their ability to travel to and from Australia after their original travel facility has expired or is about to expire. While permanent residency itself does not lapse when the travel facility ends, an RRV is required to re-enter Australia as a permanent resident after travelling overseas. RRVs provide a lawful way for individuals to continue international travel while preserving their permanent resident status. Depending on an applicant’s residence history, ties to Australia, and travel needs, different RRV options may apply. These visas are particularly important for people who live overseas for work, family, or personal reasons but wish to retain their long-term connection and rights in Australia.

Resident Return VISA?

FAQs

You should apply for a Resident Return Visa before leaving Australia if your permanent resident travel facility is close to expiring. If you are already overseas and your travel facility has expired, you must obtain an RRV before you can return to Australia as a permanent resident.

If your RRV expires while you are overseas, you cannot board a flight to Australia as a permanent resident. You will need to apply for a new Resident Return Visa from outside Australia and wait for it to be granted before travelling.

Holding a Resident Return Visa does not automatically affect citizenship eligibility. However, the time you spend outside Australia and your overall residence history may be considered when assessing future citizenship applications.

Yes. Once you return to Australia on a Resident Return Visa, you continue to hold permanent resident status, which allows you to live, work, and study in Australia without restriction.

No. A Resident Return Visa is only required for international travel. If you remain in Australia continuously, you do not need an RRV, even if your travel facility expires.

RRV applications generally require evidence of your permanent resident status, identity documents, and information about your travel history. Depending on your circumstances, additional documents showing ties to Australia may also be requested.

Repeated reliance on short-term RRVs may prompt closer assessment of your residence history and ties to Australia in future applications. It is important to plan long-term travel and residence carefully to avoid ongoing reliance on short-duration visas
