482 Visa Renewal and Extension Guide

482 Visa Renewal and Extension Guide

Your Complete Guide to 482 Visa Renewal Requirements (SID Subclass 482 & Former TSS 482)

If your current skilled visa is expiring soon, this guide explains the updated Skills in Demand (SID) subclass 482 visa — and how 482 visa renewal requirements apply differently to former TSS 482 holders and new SID applicants.

Since 7 December 2024, the former TSS (Temporary Skilled Shortage) 482 visa has been replaced by the SID visa. Under the new framework, visa holders and sponsors need to follow updated rules around occupation eligibility, employer nomination, income thresholds, and visa streams.

At Knowbal Migration and Education, we help you navigate these changes, with expert guidance customized for your occupation and the appropriate SID stream.

Ready to move forward with confidence under the new SID regime?

Benefits of the Skills in Demand (SID) Visa

If you hold an SID visa, the following are real and essential benefits under the current rules:

  • The SID visa allows you to legally live and work in Australia under a valid employer nomination, up to 4 years, depending on the SID stream and the terms of your employer’s nomination.
  • It also typically allows multiple entries, so you can travel in and out of Australia while the visa remains valid.
  • You can include eligible dependents (spouse / de facto partner, dependent children or dependent adult children under certain conditions) on your visa.
  • Dependants under a “Subsequent Entrant” visa get work and study rights while their visa is valid.
  • A dependent child included in your visa or added later as a subsequent entrant can study in Australia while under the visa’s validity.
  • Under SID, you may be able to change employers (with a new nomination) without losing visa validity, offering flexibility if your professional circumstances change.
  • The visa supports working in high-demand occupations, which helps skilled migrants maintain stable employment and income.
  • The SID visa continues to offer a pathway to permanent residence (via the employer-sponsored route) for many eligible occupations, often via the Employer Nomination Scheme visa (subclass 186) after meeting relevant conditions.

482 Visa Renewal Requirements (For Former TSS Holders) & SID Visa Continuation Requirements

If you plan to continue working after your current SID visa expires, you must meet updated continuation requirements — there is no automatic renewal, and a new application is required. You (and your employer) must satisfy a fresh set of conditions, similar to applying new, under the updated SID framework.

Employer Sponsorship & Nomination Must Be Valid

  • Your employer must remain an approved Standard Business Sponsor (or valid Labour Agreement sponsor) in order to nominate you.
  • Your role must be nominated again if you want to continue, or if there’s any change in employer.
  • Under the “change in situation” rules, if your role’s duties, hours, salary, or workplace change, the employer must submit a new nomination. The visa holder must not commence the changed role until the new nomination is approved, and if a new visa is required, it must be granted before starting the new position.

Occupation & Eligibility Must Meet Current SID Rules

  • Your occupation must be eligible under SID, i.e. either on the eligible occupation list for the Core Skills stream published by the Department of Home Affairs or qualify under Specialist Skills / Labour Agreement streams.
  • You must meet the relevant income threshold.
  • You must have the relevant skills / qualifications and (where required) a valid licence or registration for the occupation, especially for regulated professions.

Visa Application Requirements: English, Health & Character

  • The applicant must meet the approved English-language requirements for the visa, via a recognised test (e.g. IELTS, PTE, OET etc.).
  • The visa application must satisfy standard health and character checks (medicals, police clearance) for both primary applicants and any dependents/subsequent entrants.

Compliance with Visa Conditions: Work, Salary & Duties

  • Under visa conditions (Condition 8607), you must work only in your nominated occupation and only for your approved sponsor (or associated entity, where allowed). Starting any other job (or different duties/role) requires a new nomination and visa grant.
  • If employment ends or is interrupted, you must comply with the permitted timeframe allowed by the Department if your employment ends, otherwise your visa conditions may be breached.

As Australia’s skilled migration system evolves, it’s more important than ever to have clear guidance and reliable support.

SID (Subclass 482) Visa Application Process: Step-by-Step Guide

The Skills in Demand (SID) visa does not renew automatically. To continue working in Australia, you and your employer must complete a new nomination and a new visa application.

Below is the process Knowbal manages on your behalf.

1. Employer Sponsorship & Nomination Review

Knowbal checks whether:

  • Your employer’s sponsorship is active and compliant
  • The business structure has changed (new ABN, restructuring, new locations)
  • The position meets SID requirements and reflects a genuine need

This ensures that the nomination is eligible before lodgement.

2. Occupation & Role Alignment

We verify that:

  • Your role aligns with the occupation used in the nomination
  • Your duties match what the Department expects for that occupation
  • Any changes in job duties or responsibilities are correctly managed

Misalignment can cause refusal. This step protects your application.

3. Preparing Your Visa Application Documents

To meet SID visa requirements, applicants must demonstrate:

  • Identity
  • English language proficiency (if required)
  • Relevant skills, experience, licensing or registration
  • Health and character suitability

While Home Affairs does not publish a fixed document list, we help you prepare evidence such as:

  • Updated employment contract
  • Work evidence (e.g., payslips)
  • English test results (if applicable)
  • Licences/registrations
  • Updated CV
  • Any documents required for the employer’s nomination

4. Lodging the Nomination and Visa Application

The order is:

  1. Employer lodges the nomination
  2. Applicant lodges the SID visa application linked to that nomination

Knowbal ensures all details are accurate, consistent, and ready for Departmental assessment.

5. Monitoring Department Requests & Progress

After lodgement, Home Affairs may:

  • Request further information
  • Ask for updated health examinations
  • Conduct employer compliance checks

Knowbal monitors every update, responds to RFIs, communicates with your employer, and ensures required changes are reported promptly.

Why Choose Knowbal for Your SID Visa Application? (482 Visa previously)

Applying for a Skills in Demand (SID) visa can feel overwhelming, especially when your job, family stability, and long-term plans in Australia depend on a successful outcome. Knowbal simplifies this process by providing personalized, accurate, and transparent migration support tailored to your situation.

1

Industry-Backed Visa Expertise

Knowbal specializes in employer-sponsored visas, including the SID (Subclass 482) visa, and keeps up to date with changes published by the Department of Home Affairs. This helps minimize avoidable application errors and increases the strength of your submission.

2

End-to-End Support for Both Employee and Employer

The official Home Affairs process requires:

  • a valid nomination by an approved sponsor
  • a matching visa application

Knowbal supports both sides by helping employers understand nomination requirements such as the nominated occupation, labor market information (where required), and employment conditions, all of which must align with Home Affairs guidelines.

This ensures consistency between employer evidence and your visa application, reducing the risk of processing delays.

3

Compliance-Focused to Reduce Risk

The Department emphasizes correct occupation classification and adherence to visa conditions under the Skills and Work Conditions section of the SID guidelines.

Knowbal reviews:

  • position descriptions
  • salary consistency
  • genuine position evidence
  • changes in work arrangements

This is a Knowbal service, not an official Home Affairs requirement list, but it supports compliance with the Department’s assessment framework.

4

PR Pathway Assessment Included

Home Affairs provides several permanent residency pathways that may be available depending on your occupation, stream, and employment history (e.g., employer-sponsored PR visas such as subclass 186 or regional pathways).

Knowbal helps you understand which pathways are realistically available before deciding whether to submit a new SID visa application.

This ensures you invest in the option that aligns with your long-term goals.

5

Transparent, Secure, and Trusted

We provide clear guidance, timely updates, and structured communication so you always understand what stage your application is at and what comes next. This allows you to move forward with confidence while we manage the complexities for you.
